Dental hygiene involves the biyearly cleaning and checkup for patients with healthy dentitions. On that visit, the hygienist scales and polishes the teeth (also known as a prophylaxis). Any changes in medical history are updated. Also, any necessary digital radiographs are acquired. Hygiene appointments may occur more frequently for some patients, based on the health of the gums.
Sealants are highly effective in preventing decay on the occlusal (biting) surfaces of your teeth. Placement is a simple procedure in which a tooth-colored acrylic "coating" is painted onto the surface of the tooth and cured with a light. This effectively "seals" the deep grooves and acts as a barrier against plaque and acids.
Fluoride Treatment - Most children up to the age of 16 receive fluoride treatment on their regular hygiene appointment. Adults may receive this treatment as well if the caries (decay) rate is high or if they have very sensitive teeth. It is a topical treatment.
There are various reasons why a tooth may need root canal, some of which include infection, trauma, or deep decay. Endodontics (root canal therapy) is a method of retaining the tooth in the dentition by removing the nerve in the tooth and then filling and sealing the actual root canal space.
Gum Disease - Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the teeth, gums and the bone that supports the teeth. It is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Stopping this condition begins with a thorough diagnosis. To identify periodontal disease, we perform a comprehensive examination including periodontal charting and x-rays. If we detect periodontal disease, we discuss treatment options and proper home care to minimize bone loss and restore the health of your gums. Our approach is conservative. We use a non-surgical method by placing antibiotics under the gum to fight the bacteria that causes advanced forms of periodontal disease.
